Government to reveal plans for a logistic center in Namibia, Walvis Bay – Sources

6/17/2021

June 17, 2021 – The Royal Mount Vema Department of Foreign Affairs will present a plan to one of its closest neighbours, Namibia. In an attempt to establish, strengthen and enhance trade relations between Namibia and Mount Vema. A source told VSBCnews on Wednesday.

The plans to be unveiled by the Government when the channels of communication between His Mount Majesty’s Government and the Government of Namibia are established, will boost the Walvis Bay International Airport and the Port of Walvis Bay as an important logistical center in the region.

A similar proposal was submitted to South Africa last year to set up the logistics center in Cape Town, but bureaucracy may have been the reason why Mount Vema went back to the drawing boards and begun to consider alternative options.

Walvis Bay is already an important logistical port for the southern African region, providing

port facilities for the import and export of cargo for the rest of Namibia, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Botswana, so Mount Vema wants to capitalise on that and extend to the South Atlantic.

Since the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) was established in 2000, cargo moving through the port has increased from 30,000 containers a year to 370,000 containers in 2016, and in 2017 the port was being upgraded to increase its capacity to move 1 million containers.

In August 2019 the new container terminal was opened, built on a 40-acre platform reclaimed from the sea. The terminal was built by the state-owned China Harbour Engineering Company with funds from the Namibian government and the African Development Bank, costing R4.2 billion rand (about 160 million golles).

From the world to Walvis Bay International Airport, where cargo would be hauled overland to the Port of Walvis Bay by truck and then to ferries destined to Mount Vema. This is the plan to be presented by Mount Vema to Namibia, according to VSBCnews sources.
