Job Vacancy: Construction Manager for Number 1 Pashant Road Project

December 03, 2020 – Handy Deed, is looking for a Construction Manager to work on the construction of Number 1 Pashant Road, the floating building that will be its headquarters in Mount Vema. 
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring safety standards and procedures are met and, will ensure that the building project is completed safely, within the agreed timeframe and budget. You will manage the practical side of every stage of the build, and work closely with architects, surveyors and other building professionals in planning and delivery.
 
Mount Vema citizenship is not a requirement to apply for this vacancy.
 
The entire building and the surrounding structures, will be prefabricated with a life of up to 80 years, and when completed, you will ensure the property is docked on its site to form part of its unique foundation structure made of precast concrete which must be built separately.
 
The assembling process could include more than 50,000 components sourced from countries all over the world, so you will supervise and direct a range of operations on the construction site and ensure that all tradespeople and contractors are working together to an agreed plan and that progress is being made.
 
Responsibilities
As the construction manager for Number 1 Pashant Road, you will need to:
  • plan and coordinate the Number 1 Pashant Road project from start to finish, including organising the schedule of work, costings and budget
  • plan the work and oversee the buying of necessary materials and equipment
  • hire and manage staff for the project
  • manage the construction site on a day-to-day basis, including supervising the labour force, monitoring subcontractors, checking materials, inspecting work and overseeing quality control
  • ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget by setting benchmarks, agreeing budgets and monitoring progress
  • check design documents with architects, surveyors and engineers
  • promote and maintain health and safety, including site inspections to ensure safety rules are being followed
  • write reports
  • maintain regular communication and attend meetings with the management and representatives to inform them of progress on the project, i.e. stakeholder management
  • communicate with any consultants, subcontractors, supervisors, planners, quantity surveyors and others involved in the project
  • deal with any unexpected problems that may occur during the project.
 
Salary and Benefits
The salary is:
$80,000 US dollars per year for a Senior and chartered construction manager
$50,000 US dollars for an Experienced construction manager
$30,000 US dollars for a construction manager
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.
 
Working hours
The working week will be around 40 hours, though more may be required to meet project deadlines. You may be required to work at night or over public holidays. You will travel between sites and may need to travel long distances.
 
Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account, and a Mount Vema work visa.
 
What to expect
  • As a key point of contact on the project, managing competing demands from the employer, the public and a range of other professionals can sometimes seem overwhelming.
  • Your time will be split between working on site and working from an office, which may be in temporary premises on the site or may be working from home.
  • When working on site in all weathers, you will wear protective and high-visibility clothing, which will be provided by your employer.
 
Qualifications
You will need to hold an HNC or degree in a relevant subject, such as:
  • construction management
  • building management
  • building studies
  • project management
  • engineering - including civil engineering
  • surveying.
 
Skills
You will need to show:
  • strong communication skills - for liaising with a wide range of professionals and workers on site
  • leadership skills and an ability to motivate your team to ensure a high standard of work
  • excellent planning and organisational skills - for writing and monitoring project plans and schedules and utilising time and resources effectively
  • resilience and problem-solving skills - in order to overcome unexpected challenges during the construction process
  • an ability to make decisions under pressure, so that the project can progress
  • strong attention to detail for conducting site inspections and managing complex contracts
  • an awareness of health and safety procedures - for running a safe construction site
  • sound commercial awareness - to allocate and manage your budget effectively and to understand client concerns
  • numerical and IT skills, including knowledge of relevant building methods and project management software to manage information and finances during the project.
 
Work experience
Work experience is not necessary for those applicants who can demonstrate some understanding and enthusiasm for the project, especially a network of contacts in the industry can help.
